A wide variety of native plant species thrive in Lake Texana, including water hyacinth, coontail, spikerush, cattail, pondweed, bull's tounge, pickerel weed, and duck weed. Two exotic, invasive species, hydrilla and gaint salvinia, exist in the lake as well. Giant salvinia is presently limited to the Sandy Creek arm of the reservoir.

Whitetail deer are abundant in our area and are frequently seen amongst the campsites in both parks. We ask that our visitors please refrain from feeding the deer and yield to them on the roadways. Alligators can be seen often swimming in coves of the lake. While it is exciting to spot and watch one, we ask our visitors to not get too close. If you see an alligator close to public areas, please contact security at (361) 782-8013.

The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, one of the most important birding habitat networks in North America, has 7 sites on Lake Texana. It offers bird watchers excellent opportunities to observe birds intersecting along two major migration flyways. The Park’s elevated gazebo is also a great spot for bird watching.

Information on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail is available at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Office (361-782-7146). Additional information on the Birding Trails of Texas is available from Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, TX 78744-3291, 800-792-1112.
